Your skin ages with your other tissues and often shows wear and tear as early as your 20s. Natural aging and premature aging caused by sun exposure, smoking, or other factors lead to thin, saggy, dry, and wrinkled skin with age spots and broken blood vessels. While healthy lifestyle choices and good skin care can protect you from early signs of aging, wrinkles and loose skin are inevitable. Face procedures, such as facelift, eyelid surgery, and fat transfer, can revitalize your appearance.

How the Skin Changes with Age
The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin and is in a constant state of cell turnover. Skin cells mature as they rise to the surface, then die, shed, and make way for new cells.
The deeper skin tissues are called the dermis and contain sweat and oil glands, lymph vessels, nerves, and a structural network of elastin and collagen fibers for supple, firm skin. A layer of fatty tissue sits under the dermis and provides volume and structure.
Aging skin produces less collagen and elastin, which adversely affects the quality of your skin. With lower amounts of these youthful proteins, your skin starts to droop and wrinkle. The oil and sweat glands decrease with age, causing dry skin, and cell turnover slows down, leading to thinner skin with deepening wrinkles and a crepe-like texture.
As you get older, the fat deposits in your face shrink and sink lower, forming jowls in the lower face and facial hollows around the temples, eyes, and cheeks.
Procedures for Sagging Skin
Facelift, neck lift, and eyelid surgery are face procedures that combat aging skin. These facial plastic surgeries remove loose skin and reposition or remove fat pockets for tighter skin and a more youthful facial shape. Facelift focuses on the mid-face and lower face, while neck lift transforms the submental area (under the chin), jawline, and neck contour. Eyelid surgery renews the upper and/or lower eyelids by removing excess skin for a well-rested appearance with no drooping eyelids or under-eye bags.
Restore Lost Facial Volume with Fat Transfer
A hollow appearance makes you appear older than your chronological age. While face procedures can reposition existing fat pockets, fat transfer restores the volume lost to natural aging. Facial fat transfer, or fat grafting, harvests unwanted fat from another part of your body, purifies the cells and then reinjects the fat into strategic areas of your face. Your body will reabsorb some of the fat, but the remaining fat survives indefinitely.
You can combat aging skin with one or more face procedures and fat transfer. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Krau in Bay Harbor Islands, Florida, to learn more. Call (305) 861-6881 or request a virtual consultation.
