I am consumed with thoughts about how my nose looks.
I worry that every person I meet is staring at my nose.
I experience sad or depressed feelings because of the size/shape of my nose.
If you relate to any of the above statements, you may benefit from nose reshaping surgery, suggests a recent study that looked at the psychological impact of rhinoplasty.
Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Ary Krau can attest to this. He has witnessed the life-changing benefits of rhinoplasty on his patients. Here, Dr. Krau explains the results of the study in more detail, and what this means for you.
What the Study Found
Researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, collected and reviewed 16 studies that asked people about their self-esteem and quality of life both before and after cosmetic surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, eyelid lift and Botox.
Dr. Joseph F. Sobanko, lead author of the study, said he was already aware of studies that showed improvement in body image after procedure like breast augmentation.
Prior to the study, “The only justification that I could provide … of why we perform facial cosmetic procedures is that it has been my anecdotal experience that patients may sometimes feel better with even a slight improvement in appearance,” Dr. Sobanko said.
When combing through the data, the team found that rhinoplasty patients rated their self-esteem and body image higher after surgery.
Dr. Sobanko hopes that similar studies in the future will support his team’s findings.
How Rhinoplasty Can Change Your Life
The nose is the focal point of the face — and if the size or shape is imperfect, there is no way to mask it. Some people spend years hating the way their nose looks and feeling insecure with their facial appearance. Being able to improve that area of the face with rhinoplasty can have a tremendous impact on self-image and boost self-esteem.
With greater self-confidence, the possibilities are endless. People that feel great about themselves and their looks are more likely to pursue new career prospects, participate in social activities and embrace life’s opportunities without fear or hesitation.
