Rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping, is one of the most popular facial procedures among men. In fact, it was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure among men in 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Even so, male plastic surgery is not discussed as often as plastic surgery for women. This may make it difficult for men interested in rhinoplasty to find the information they need before making a decision. Having performed rhinoplasty surgery on hundreds of patients, including men, Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Ary Krau believes it is important that you understand the following points about nose reshaping.
- You’re not alone. There are several reasons why men decide to undergo rhinoplasty. Some men want to get rid of an unattractive bump on the bridge of the nose, and others may seek cosmetic surgery following an injury or accident. Men who seek to enhance their appearance with rhinoplasty surgery come from different age groups and backgrounds.
- There is a difference between men and women’s noses. Some men worry that rhinoplasty surgery will make their nose appear more feminine. However, a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Krau knows that there are features that set apart the male nose from the female nose. This is why there is generally a difference in how men and women want their noses to look. Before surgery, it’s important to discuss your ideal outcome and choices with your plastic surgeon.
- A subtle approach to male rhinoplasty. When undergoing rhinoplasty surgery, most men worry that their nose will look unnatural. Before surgery, Dr. Krau performs a physical examination of each patient’s nose to determine the best way to obtain natural-looking results. Dr. Krau uses the “closed” approach instead of the “open” approach whenever possible. The closed approach eliminates the risk of visible scarring by making incisions inside the nostrils instead of across the strip of skin separating the nostrils.
The Procedure
Dr. Krau provides quality care for all his patients undergoing rhinoplasty surgery. All rhinoplasty procedures begin with the patient receiving anesthesia to minimize pain. Next, Dr. Krau will make surgical incisions inside the nostrils and, if necessary, will add an incision across the skin that separates the nostrils. Dr. Krau will then proceed to make surgical alterations to the nose, such as smoothing a bump on the nasal bridge, reducing the size of the nostrils or changing the cartilage and bone of the nose to improve its appearance. Once these changes are done, the incisions are closed with sutures and Dr. Krau places a surgical bandage on the nose.
