The area around your eyes is one of the first areas to give clues about your real age. With aging, the skin around the eyes begins to lose its elasticity, the tissues can become lax and the muscles may weaken. As a result, the upper and lower eyelids can begin to droop and sag. As if that weren’t enough, “bags” of fatty tissue can accumulate beneath the eyes. Of course, you can reverse those telltale signs of aging with eyelid surgery, known in the medical community as blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery refreshes your eyes and in doing so restores a youthful expression to your face. Here, Dr. Ary Krau provides insight into the types of eyelid surgery available today.
About Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure performed with anesthesia. Typically, loose skin is removed, the tissues and muscles are tightened and fat is removed or redistributed. No discomfort is experienced by the patient during the procedure, and because of discreet incision placement, scarring is rarely evident.
In most cases, eyelid surgery’s goal is to restore a youthful and pleasing appearance to the eyes or to correct issues affecting vision. However, the exact surgical plan depends on the specific patient and his or her needs.
Upper vs. Lower Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery can be performed on upper lids (eyelid lift), lower lids, or both.
Upper eyelid surgery eliminates loose skin that covers the natural fold of the upper eyelids and, for some people, hangs over the eyelashes and obstructs vision. A little bit of fat may also be removed from the upper lids. The skin will be tightened to create a smoother and firmer upper eyelid. The incisions for upper eyelid surgery are created in the natural creases of the upper lid.
Lower eyelid surgery removes excess tissue, fat and skin that cause bulges or “bags” underneath the eyelid. Sometimes, a small bit of skin is removed from the lower lash line, too. The incisions for lower eyelid surgery can be created just below the lower lash line or inside the eyelid.
