The cosmetic results of mommy makeover can be life-changing. Physically, women enjoy a more sculpted and toned body, while psychologically, they experience a surge in self-confidence.
Understandably, many mommy makeover patients are eager to know how soon after their surgery they can resume normal activities, including exercise. Here, top Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Ary Krau provides general guidelines and a timeline for getting back up to speed after surgery.
Bedrest Is Key During the Initial Recovery Period
It’s only natural to want to get up and start moving immediately after your mommy makeover. However, for safety reasons, you will need to avoid strenuous exercise and anything that will raise your heartrate too soon. Instead, you will need to focus on getting plenty of bedrest, relaxing, and eating healthily during the first two weeks of recovery. Taking short walks around your house as soon as you feel ready is encouraged to promote good circulation. Dr. Krau may clear you to start increasing the length and speed of your walks around the two-week mark, so long as your body allows it.
Slow and Steady: Resuming Your Normal Exercise Routine
About three to six weeks after mommy makeover, Dr. Krau may clear you to resume your normal exercise routine, but at a modified pace. He will advise you to slowly and gradually build up your endurance. This may include adding more time or distance to every run or adding more weights to every strength training routine. The key is to slowly and safely resume exercise without hurting your healing body. If at any time you feel any pain or discomfort, go easy to minimize the risk of an injury or complication. While most patients are able to fully resume their normal exercise routine by the six- to eight-week mark, Dr. Krau will give the final word as to when it’s safe for you to do so. Rest assured that Dr. Krau and his staff will monitor your recovery closely, and make any adjustments or recommendations necessary to help you heal as safely and quickly as possible.
