Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is one of the safest ways to improve the appearance of many body parts. It’s also among the most convenient. Renowned Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Ary Krau explains why patients are raving about fat transfer.
What is Fat Transfer?
As the name implies, fat transfer is the process by which fat is removed from one area of the body and injected into another. The fat is sucked out of the donor area via liposuction. It is then processed and purified. The fat is then injected into the area needing augmentation.
Fat is harvested from the patient’s unique problem areas, such as the following:
- Abdomen
- Back
- Buttocks
- Hips
- Thighs
- Upper arms
Keep in mind that the grafted fat is always taken from an area where it exists in surplus.
Fat Transfer Benefits
The benefits of fat transfer run the gamut. Because the patient’s own fat is used, there is little risk of an allergic reaction or infection. For most patients, treatments take just one session. There is little discomfort or downtime. Dr. Krau asks patients to avoid strenuous exercise for a few days.
In fact, you can drive yourself home after treatment unless you have general anesthesia. That is only necessary when large volumes of fat are removed.
A Natural Look
Fat transfer results in a natural look, no matter where the fat is transplanted. A facial fat transfer provides a more youthful appearance without the need for surgery. It’s a minimally invasive anti-aging treatment, requiring only injections. Brazilian butt lift, which involves transferring fat to the buttocks, gives you the rounded buttocks you’ve always wanted.
With fat transfer, you don’t look like you had “work done.” You just look better and younger.
Long Lasting Results
The results of a fat transfer are not instantaneous. It will take several months for the full effects to appear. However, it’s worth the wait because the results are long lasting. If the transplanted fat develops a new blood supply, the results prove permanent.
Permanent Fat Removal
The fat cells removed via liposuction don’t come back. Fat is removed from where you don’t want it. While liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, it is designed to eradicate stubborn fat pockets that don’t respond to diet and exercise.
For instance, a patient may augment her breasts with the fat removed from her buttocks or love handles. Her figure is better-proportioned, with larger breasts and a slimmer waist or buttocks. It’s a win-win. No wonder patients rave about the procedure!
