The percentage of men who seek cosmetic procedures is steadily on the rise, but most people probably do not realize that fact given that male patients tend to seek procedures that produce subtle, natural-looking results. They also tend to be more discreet about any work they have had done. Having treated many male patients at his practice in Miami, Dr. Ary Krau, a board-certified plastic surgeon, can testify to this trend. Here, he shares some of the most popular procedures his male patients request.
1. Gynecomastia Surgery
Men with gynecomastia have enlarged, overdeveloped breast tissue. While some men work hard in the gym to develop muscular pecs, most do not want the feminized, curvy physique that comes from gynecomastia. When the condition does not clear up on its own, Dr. Krau can perform gynecomastia surgery to reduce the size of the chest with minimal scars.
2. Injectables
Not all forms of cosmetic enhancement require surgery: injectables are a quick and easy solution for diminishing lines that age the face. In fact, men account for over half a million Botox injections in the United States annually. Botox is a botulinum toxin that temporarily freezes facial muscles responsible for certain lines (like vertical frown lines and horizontal lines across the forehead), while Juvéderm is a dermal filler that restores volume to areas where lax skin has developed wrinkles. Unless the patient specifies otherwise, Dr. Krau takes a gentle approach so that the results appear natural.
3. Rhinoplasty
Many men seek male nose reshaping surgery so that their nose enhances their handsomeness and fits in proportion to the rest of their face. In addition to addressing certain cosmetic issues (like a bump on the bridge), Dr. Krau can slightly masculinize the face by having the nasal tip point forward and widening the base.
4. Liposuction
Stubborn fat deposits can cling to both male and female bodies, so it makes sense that liposuction is so popular among men and women alike. Men most often turn to liposuction, a surgery that permanently suctions out unwanted excess fat cells, to improve the contours of the abdomen, whereas women are most likely to target their hips and thighs. Many men also prefer a modest approach, since their ideal body shape is “toned” instead of skinny.
5. Eyelid Surgery
While certain wrinkles on a man’s face can make him look more handsome or dignified, the lines and skin immediately surrounding the eyes can prematurely age the face. Blepharoplasty can address crow’s feet and the sagging skin around the eyes that make a man appear tired. Depending on the needs of the male patient, Dr. Krau can perform upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery or a combination of both.
