Breasts are not identical twins; they are more like sisters. No two breasts are identical and slight differences in shape, size and position are normal. However, sometimes the breasts are markedly different in size, to the point that it affects clothing choices and causes embarrassment.
Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ary Krau, can help you achieve breast symmetry through augmentation with implants or breast reduction.
What Causes Breast Asymmetry?
It's common for women to have asymmetrical breasts, especially during puberty, but the breasts typically reach similar sizes when fully developed. Unfortunately, around 25 percent of women may have uneven breasts permanently.
Most cases of uneven breasts resolve around between the ages of 18 and 21, when the breasts reach maturity. Breast asymmetry can stem from a previous injury, infection or radiation treatment of one breast.
Many women with uneven breasts inherited the trait from their mother or grandmother.
Genetics plays a significant role in breast size, and women with a relative who has noticeably different-sized breasts are more likely to have asymmetrical breasts too. It's a congenital disorder that can't be prevented, but there are ways to correct uneven breasts. Corrective breast surgery is an option when the breasts are fully developed.
Breast Surgery for Uneven Breasts
Asymmetrical breasts make it challenging to find a bra, swimsuit or top that fits correctly. Women may have to stuff one side of their bra to feel like their peers, and uneven breasts can be uncomfortable and affect self-confidence. Dr. Krau can provide an even bust and boost in self-confidence with breast surgery for uneven breasts.
There are two options for correcting size differences, and the type of procedure depends on the size of each breast. Some women may wish to reduce the size of the larger breast with reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction) to match the smaller one. Others may want to enhance the smaller breast.
Breast augmentation for uneven breasts can involve a saline or silicone breast implant. Dr. Krau offers gummy bear silicone implants that are form stable and feel more like natural breast tissue. These implants come in round and teardrop shapes. Round implants increase breast fullness in the upper portion, while teardrop-shaped implants mimic the natural slope of the breast.
Dr. Krau can help you find the right implant size for an even chest with the Mentor breast implant sizing kit that allows you to try on your desired size beforehand and determine the right one to even out your natural size differences.
