It’s a refrain we frequently hear during consultations at the Miami plastic surgery offices of Dr. Ary Krau:
“I don’t feel as old or tired as the person I see in the mirror. Can you help me look younger and more refreshed?”
If you, too, feel that your facial appearance does not reflect your youthful vigor, your eyes may be to blame. Sagging eyelid skin, loss of volume around the eyebrows and tear trough area, dark circles and bags commonly give patients in their 40s, 50s and older a perpetually tired, sad or angry-looking expression.
Fret not — with the help of Dr. Krau, you can recapture a rested, refreshed look. In this post, Dr. Krau suggests the most reliable solutions to wake up tired-looking eyes.
Surgical Fixes
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is widely regarded as the gold standard of eyelid rejuvenation. Upper eyelid surgery removes loose, sagging upper eyelid skin and fat that may make you look older and more exhausted than you really feel. Lower eyelid surgery can tighten up lax lower eyelid skin and remove puffiness or lower eyelid wrinkles. The incisions for eyelid surgery are created in the natural creases of the eyelids or inside the lower lid, so scarring is virtually unnoticeable.
Sometimes eyelid surgery is performed in conjunction with brow lift to elevate a heavy or drooping brow that makes the eyelids appear hooded or droopy. Lifting the brows opens up the eyes and creates a brighter facial expression. The incisions for brow lift are often hidden in the hairline to prevent visible scarring.
Non-surgical Alternatives
Surgery is not always necessary to rejuvenate tired-looking eyes. Some patients see great results with non-surgical alternatives like injectables. Injectables can be used by themselves or in conjunction with blepharoplasty and/or brow lift.
Botox injections minimize fine lines and crinkles around the outer corners of the eyes or deep furrows in between the eyebrows that give the eyes a fatigued or angry expression.
Dermal filler injections are often used to correct tear trough deformities, which appear as “bags” or dark circles between the lower eyelids and upper cheeks. The filler softens and smoothes the transition between the lower eyelid and upper cheek area, waking up tired-looking eyes.
The results of Botox and dermal fillers take effect quickly, and can last anywhere from three to nine months, depending on the product. Regular maintenance appointments are required to prolong the results.
