Dermal fillers are an incredible anti-aging solution available at the practice of Dr. Ary Krau. These injectable products can temporarily erase wrinkles and enhance the facial features, gently turning back the hands of time.
Fillers are particularly popular at our practice because the treatment is relatively painless and does not require recovery downtime. However, one drawback of filler treatment is it commonly causes minor swelling.
While the skill and experience of your injector plays a part in how much you will swell, there are also strategies you can follow to minimize this aftereffect. Read on to learn more.
Refrain From Medications That Thin Your Blood
If medically advisable, refrain from taking blood thinning, over-the-counter medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen and steer clear of blood-thinning supplements such as gingko biloba, ginseng, vitamin E and St. John’s Wort.
If you take a prescription blood thinner for a medical condition, do not stop taking the medication without first talking to your primary care physician.
Avoid Alcohol the Day Before Your Appointment
Alcohol is known to increase the likelihood of bruising and swelling from filler treatment. Refrain from drinking alcohol for 24 hours prior to your appointment.
Use Arnica Supplements
Arnica is a natural supplement that helps minimize bruising and swelling. You can find it in pharmacies and natural food stores. Start taking the supplements two days before your filler appointment.
Apply Ice
Intermittently applying ice to the treated area(s) is a great way to reduce swelling. Take care to wrap the ice or cold compress in a towel to avoid directly touching it to your skin, and use gentle (not firm) pressure.
Avoid Intense Heat
It is best to avoid subjecting the treated area(s) to intense heat until the swelling starts to subside. Refrain from sunbathing, using tanning beds, doing hot yoga or going in hot tubs or saunas for at least 48 hours.
Refrain From Strenuous Exercise Right After Treatment
Elevating your heart rate can cause or worsen swelling. Refrain from vigorous exercise for 12 to 24 hours after your filler treatment.
Maintain Hydration and Eat Fresh Foods
Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, and avoid eating processed or packaged foods with excess salt.
